Kratom is currently legal in the United States. However, it is illegal in Thailand, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Myanmar, Malaysia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand and Vietnam, and is regulated in New Zealand.
Four states currently have the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA), while others, such as Oregon, have taken steps to adopt a legal but regulated approach to kratom. In 2016, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposed a federal ban on Kratom, but ultimately dropped the proposal to give scientists more time to conduct studies and research on the substance.
